Who We Are

A QUESTION LED TO THE IDEA

-------------------------------------------------------------------

“Why not sell our seeds directly to growers instead of to a distributor?”

A producer well known for being innovative and close to his community, Clément Létourneau nourished the idea of building a seed screening facility in order to sell his seeds directly to the producers in his region.

SEMENCES PROGRAIN WAS BORN

-------------------------------------------------------------------

With his son André and his wife Marie-Claire Bourgeois, Clément Létourneau founded Semences Prograin Inc., specializing in the production, packaging and sale of wheat, oat and barley seeds.

A PASSION FOR SOYBEANS

-------------------------------------------------------------------

One day, Mr. Létourneau was approached by a livestock feed dealer who was looking for roasted soybeans.  Because of the ingenuity of his son André and his wife Marie-Claire, came the building, the silo, the machinery and a roaster.  That was the start of a lasting passion for soybeans, and the realization of a dream no one else had dreamed of in Québec.

The Létourneau’s passion for soybeans was contagious. Growing and then using soybeans in Québec underwent staggering growth. Semences Prograin then acquired a key resource for its management team: Alain Létourneau, the president’s nephew. He had just completed his marketing studies when he joined Prograin.

RESEARCH, A PRIORITY

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Soybeans became an increasingly popular crop and Prograin decided to invest in research for the first time.  A better understanding of soybean management and the best production techniques became a priority.  In collaboration with Agriculture Canada and MAPAQ, a research program was defined and begun.

THE START OF A GREAT ADVENTURE

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Jumping from five producers in 1983 to more than fifty the following year, Prograin was growing with vigor! Expansion was stunning, so that in 1987, the company began a new phase, one of exporting its products to Europe and Japan. That is when Patrick-Marc Ham became part of the Prograin family to help develop these markets.

INDUCTED IN THE HALL OF FAME

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Clément Létourneau is inducted in the prestigious Québec agriculture Hall of Fame :
For his innovative approach, which enabled him to play a decisive role in the highly specialized domain of soybean farming;
For his innovative business sense, which opened the doors to the Canadian and international markets;
For his creation of the first research centre for the development and improvement of soybeans in Québec.

CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW
SEED TREATMENT PLANT

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Strong demand from producers for our seed treatment and our pre-inoculated seeds motivated our decision to invest
more than $1 million for building a new plant for that purpose. Ultramodern and high performing, our new facilities enable
us to produce our treated and pre-inoculated seeds ourselves. That ensures complete control of production
periods, as well as of the quality of the final product.

Prograin, Always farther!

Today, the owner of the company, Alain Létourneau and his team continue to cultivate that same passion for soybeans and
pursue the ambitious objective of conquering excellence at a national and international scale.
